Continuing Care is the provision of specialized care for the elderly either in a hospital or as part of home support.
Continuing Care is provided when you can no longer safely look after and care for yourself.
Care is provided by experienced, fully trained registered nurses, caregivers and domestic helpers on a 24 hours per day 7 days per week basis.
A spacious room with ensuite facilities for each resident is to be provided in the new hospital to be built by the Trust.

Dementia or Alzheimers is a collection of symptoms resulting from a failure of the brain. The result is a progressive decline in a person's ability to think, to remember, and to reason.
Dementia or Alzheimers is NOT a normal part of aging but the result of a disease process.
What are the Symptoms?
A gradual memory loss
Decline in ability to perform routine tasks
Impairment of judgment
Disorientation of time and place
Personality changes
Changes in mood or behavior
Loss of language skills
Putting objects in inappropriate places
A secure and safe area for residents with dementia is part of the plans of the new hospital.

hospice or palliative care
Hospice or palliative care is a special type of care for patients whose illness is no longer curable.
It enables these patients to achieve the best possible quality of life during the final stages of their illness prior to death.
It can also includes family support and bereavement services.
Palliative care can be provided in the hospice in-patient unit or in a person's home or place of residence in the community.
Hospice care is a concept, a philosophy of care.
The Friends and the Nelson Region Hospice Trust will work together to enhance palliative care in the new hospital.

respite care
Respite care is the opportunity for an elderly person to stay in a care facility for a short period of time.
It allows the at-home caregiver an opportunity to be refreshed by taking a rest from the ongoing task of providing care and it gives the cared-for person a change in environment or perhaps the opportunity to establish a new care routine under supervision for when they return to their home.
It can also be used for a person recuperating from a temporary illness.
Respite Care services for short stay residents will be available from the Friends' new hospital.
